SAVANNAH, GA - They may not wear the uniform, but they play an important part in helping Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police and saving taxpayer money.  Tuesday night SCMPD Chief Julie Tolbert recognized dozens of dedicated volunteers at the Volunteer Appreciation Awards Banquet at the Savannah Civic Center.

The volunteers were honored for their years of service, number of hours volunteered and number of events worked.  The Volunteer of the Year Award went to Lou Friedenberg. Friedenberg also received a  20 Years of Service award and certificates for working more than 500 hours in the Southside Precinct.

Mayor Edna Jackson, Alderman Van Johnson, members of the SCMPD command staff and many volunteers and their families attended the event.

In 2013 SCMPD volunteers worked more than 4,748 total hours for the department, which translates to more than $107,000 in savings.
