A look at District 2 school board candidates

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. - In just a week, voters will head to the polls to cast their ballots for a number of issues including who will represent them on the Muscogee County School Board. News 3 took a look at candidates running for the District 2 seat. It's the most contested race with 4 candidates vying for the position.

District 2 covers 6 Muscogee County Schools including Northside High School, Blanchard Elementary, Double Churches Elementary, Double Churches Middle, North Columbus Elementary and Veterans Memorial Middle School. Candidate Victor Morales says if elected, he will focus on more options for students after high school graduation.

"There's no programs for kids to go to work and I want to work with the schools to create programs. Work with businesses," said Morales.

Candidate Bart Steed is focused on graduation rates and test scores across the district.

"We got to get the whole city as a whole with better graduation rates and that's going to benefit the whole city," said Steed.

Incumbent John Wells says his 28 year record shows his focus is on the teachers and the students.

"Focusing on resources to the classrooms to make sure that the teachers have everything they need to teach the children in the classrooms and the children have the opportunity to learn effectively in the classroom," said Wells.

Each candidate also talked about finances and how money is managed throughout the Muscogee County School District. Wells says the finances have been managed properly throughout his time on the board. Challengers say there is much room for improvement. Candidate John Thomas makes several promises to his voters on his website concerning finances. He says he will be a worthy steward of the school district budget and he will never take any trip funded by the school district budget.

We couldn't reach John Thomas Tuesday for an interview. There are 3 candidates vying for the at large position. Cathy Williams is not running for re-election. District 8's Beth Harris will face challenger Frank Myers for that seat.
