AIKEN, S.C. - The seventh-seeded Montevallo Falcons used a big five-run seventh inning to knock off sixth-seeded Armstrong Atlantic State University, 8-4, in the 2014 Peach Belt Conference Baseball Tournament semifinals on Sunday afternoon at Roberto Hernandez Stadium in Aiken, S.C.
The loss brings the season to a close for the Pirates (28-20) as Armstrong reached the PBC Tournament semis for the second time in the last three seasons. Montevallo (31-20) advances to the PBC Tournament final to face top-seeded and No. 2-ranked Lander later Sunday.
Jackson Slaid's RBI single staked the Falcons to a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Each team scored two runs in the fifth inning as Montevallo got RBI singles from Haskins and Marshall to go up, 3-0, while the Pirates responded with an RBI single from senior Dalton Johnson and an RBI single from R.J. Dennard. The single was his 200th hit as a Pirate, becoming just the 12th player in school history to reach that milestone, but the second this season - teammate Clayton Miller did so earlier this season against UNC Pembroke on April 20th.
Montevallo put the game out of reach by sending 10 men to the plate in a five-run seventh inning to take an 8-2 lead. Scotty Smith's two-run double was the key hit in the frame for the Falcons.
Armstrong rallied in the bottom of the seventh as Dennard delivered a two-run double to cut the lead in half, 8-4. The Pirates loaded the bases in the eighth inning, but Montevallo reliever Alex Guilford pitched out of the jam, then hurled a scoreless ninth to close out the win for the Falcons.
Joey Hume picked up the win in relief for the Falcons, giving up two hits and two runs in 2 1/3 innings of work, walking two. Armstrong starterRyan Good (6-5) took the loss for the Pirates, giving up eight hits and three runs in 5 1/3 innings of work, walking one while striking out six.
Dennard finished the game 3-for-5 with three RBIs with a pair of doubles, while Dalton Johnson went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Montevallo was led by Vinny Rodriguez' three hits.
