Barbeque and benefit concert raises 23K for tornado victims

Posted: Updated:
CHOCOWINITY, N.C. - Organizers with the Twin Lakes RV Resort and Yacht Basin tell 9 On Your Side the concert they held last month to raise money for tornado relief efforts raised more than $23,000.

They say one group from Raleigh even sent $5,000 themselves. And a victim who's wheelchair bound was able to replace his specialized, hand-controlled car.

The organizers say all the money raised that afternoon went to tornado victims.

The Twin Lakes RV Resort and Yacht Basin is helping its neighbors by holding a fundraiser.

On Saturday, volunteers came together to for a barbeque plate sale and benefit concert.

Amy Schulz, who lives in the community, says the idea came about after seeing their friends and neighbors homes destroyed on Whichards Beach Road. Schulz says many people in the community were home  and saw the tornado destroy homes on April 25th.

"When we got up the next morning and saw how close it was to us. That's are neighbors over there and we decided we had to do something," said Schulz.

Schulz says before Saturday's barbeque plate sale, they had already raised $6,000.

"Everything has been donated, so every dime of this will go tornado victims, the local tornado victims," said Schulz.

The fundraiser will cap off this evening with an Eli Craig Band Benefit Concert. The local band is holding a free concert at the Twin Lakes RV Resort. Although the concert is free, event organizers are asking for donations. All the money donated at the concert will go to local tornado victims.
