Columbus woman says clinical trial rid her of Type 1 Diabetes

Posted: Updated:
A Columbus woman says she no longer has diabetes.

Laura Cochran took part in a clinical trial ten years ago at Emory University.
She was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 27. That meant a life time of dependency on insulin either injected or through the use of a pump. Her body could not produce insulin. But doctors at Emory transplanted islet cells from a donor into her body. After two infusions she had more than enough islet cells that produce insulin.

“Which gave me over a million new islet cells. These cells circulate through the body and start making insulin,” said Cochran.

Though she hasn’t used insulin in ten years, Cochran is not calling it a cure, but a miracle treatment.

Researchers at Emory are awaiting FDA approval of the islet cell transplants so surgery will no longer be considered experimental. Cochran and another member of the clinical trial returned to Emory University in March to celebrate their ten year anniversary of entering the trial.
