SEFFNER, FL (WFLA) -
Hundreds of bicycle enthusiasts got up early Sunday morning to take part in the 1st annual Fallen Heroes memorial ride in Seffner.
The event was put on and sponsored by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. Proceeds of the event will go towards the construction of a memorial at the department’s Malcolm E. Beard Sheriff’s Operations Center in Ybor City.
“A group of riders with the sheriff’s office came up with the idea and we decided to go with it,” said HCSO deputy Ryan Thomas. “Construction has already begun on the memorial and the money raised will go to that project.”
Thomas added that 15 Hillsborough County deputies have died in the line of duty.
Sunday’s ride started and ended at McDonald Elementary School on Pruett Rd. Those who took part had the option of riding the 50-mile course or the 25-mile course.
The event was originally scheduled for Saturday but was delayed by one day due a storm system that moved into the Bay area on Friday.
The Fallen Heroes Memorial will feature a granite wall with the names of the fallen HCSO deputies and a mosaic tile HCSO sheriff’s badge.
