EFFINGHAM COUNTY, GA - UPDATE:

The Effingham County Sheriff's Office says they have arrested the mother of a 5-month-old girl in connection to the baby's suspicious death back in April.

19-year-old Summer Shelley has been charged with felony cruelty to children in the 2nd degree, false statements, possession of marijuana and possession of drug related objects in connection to the death of her daughter Payton. The child's grandmother, 43-year-old Sharon Nyberg has been arrested and charged with false statements to law enforcement regarding the death investigation.

Deputies say on April 26th they responded to a residence on Appaloosa way on a report of a child not breathing. The baby was pronounced dead at a local hospital a short time later. During the investigation detectives say they located drugs and drug related objects inside the home. Sheriff's Spokesman David Esanipoor says the investigation reveals that Shelley was high on drugs and did not provide her daughter necessary medical care. He adds that she was also smoking marijuana in bed with the child, prior to falling asleep for an extended period of time.

During Shelley and Nyberg's arrest, the child's father, 25-year-old Bryant Ward, was arrested and charged with simple assault on a law enforcement officer and obstruction of a law enforcement officer.

Shelley, Nyberg and Ward have all been booked into the Effingham County Jail.
