Hundreds of veterans attend 7th annual Operation Stand Down

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. - Hundreds of homeless veterans and veterans in need filled the Columbus Convention and Trade Center Saturday morning to get help from local organizations. It's called Operation Stand Down and it's the 7th year The South Atlantic Center of Veterans Education and Training hosted the event. The event provides a number of services to veterans in need including job and housing assistance, clothes, haircuts and food.

Organizers also provide the veterans a couple of hot meals during the day's event. Organizers say there are hundreds of homeless veterans in our area, and they are trying to help in every way they can.

"Sometimes things don't go so well and some of our men and women find themselves homeless. That's why we exist to try and make sure that no soldier or service member period will have to go through that ordeal," said Romal Holder, the Vice President of Development for SACVET.

Free medical screenings and mental health exams were also available. Women veterans had a special section of the convention center where business clothes, cosmetics, and women's health screenings were available to them.

If you need more information you can visit gcvret.org or call the office at 706-593-3393.
