AUBURN, Ala. -
The Smiths Station Panthers avenged last season's playoff loss to Auburn by sweeping the second-round matchup Friday night.
Smiths Station won game one, 5-4, thanks to the left arm of Max Newton. He threw a complete game, scattered six hits, gave up four runs, just three earned and struck out eight.
The Panthers trailed 3-2 going into the seventh, but Dalton Sinquefield drove home Nigel Lawrence with the tying run. They would add two more, meaning Troy Williams's solo home run in the bottom of the seventh wasn't quite enough to tie the game.
Game two was tied at seven going into the sixth inning, but the Panthers scored seven in the frame to break it open and advance.
