LAKELAND, FL (WFLA) -

Lakeland Police are asking the public for help solving a disturbing string of cat mutilations.

Police have received three reports about mutilated cats in the last few days.

Friday morning, a groundskeeper found a large white cat in the front yard of a home at 2 Brook Lane. The cat had a large hole that appeared to be a recent injury.

"I thought it was garbage bag, and then I went over and said 'wow' this is a big cat," said Patrick Fisher, a groundskeeper who found the cat. "It had a round hole in the side," he added.

Police say it is not known what caused the injury. They also do not know who owns the cat.

"We are going door-to-door, we have a flyer we are leaving for them to call us back if they have seen any unusual activity in their neighborhood," said Sgt. Gary Gross with Lakeland Police.

A necropsy will be performed to determine the cause of the cat's death. Polk County Animal Control is also investigating.

On Thursday, Lakeland Police responded to a home at 1421 Newport Ave. The resident told police that at 11 p.m. on March 5, he found his cat mutilated in the front yard.

The cat had been torn in half behind its front legs and the lower half of the cat's body was missing.

The man also said that he had two other cats that were missing and had last seen them at 7 a.m. on March 5.

The next day, the man said he went for a walk and found the lower half of his cat's body on Crystal Lake Drive.

Police investigated and found that a neighbor had found the upper half of a cat in a yard at 1408 Easton Drive. She told the owner of the cat, who said he last saw the cat at 7 a.m. on April 23.

The cat's remains were taken to the Cleveland Heights Animal Hospital and held for the police. Doctor Houghton said that the trauma appeared to have been done with a knife or sharp object.

Police have increased patrols in the area and detectives are following up on the incidents.

Sgt. Gross says there may be more missing cats out there.

"If their cats have come up missing and they have not notified us, some people don’t, they just figure the cat strayed off, well now once they get wind of this they may be more likely to report this so we can look into it," Gross said.

No suspects have been identified.

If you have information that can help detectives, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-226-8477.
