Durham police to address internal investigation into firearms

Posted: Updated:
DURHAM, N.C. - Durham's police chief will hold a press briefing Friday to discuss an internal investigation involving firearms.

Durham police would not elaborate on the details of the press briefing.

A tip to WNCN Investigates said a handful of officers were stealing gun parts from weapons in the police department's possession and selling them online.

When confronted about the accusations, Durham Police Chief Jose Lopez would not answer.

Instead, his department issued a statement saying, "The Durham Police Department conducted a self-initiated investigation into whether proper procedures were followed in the handling of property in the department's possession.

"State personnel privacy laws prevent the department from releasing further details related to this investigation."

WNCN received a list of names of officers potentially involved in the investigation, and city officials confirmed that two of the officers have been suspended.

Capt. Kevin Cates and Lt. George Zeipekkis were suspended without pay on March 27 for a "violation of rules policy." The police department will not say if the suspensions are connected to the allegations.

Durham police also won't say how long the officers have been suspended.

WNCN reached out to the city manager and to Mayor Bill Bell who have not responded.
