Russell County deputy arrested for drug trafficking

Posted: Updated:
RUSSELL COUNTY, Ala. - A Russell County Sheriff's Department deputy has been arrested for drug trafficking, Sheriff Heath Taylor announced Wednesday afternoon.
Sheriff Taylor says 24 year old Brandon Williams was a deputy in the department for about 2 months. The Sheriff's office was tipped off about a week ago, that Williams may have been helping a known drug dealer. They concluded their investigation Wednesday afternoon.

In conjunction with the Lee County Sheriff's Department, officers searched Brandon Williams's River Chase Drive apartment in Lee County, Wednesday morning.  Inside the apartment, authorities found a pound a half of synthetic marijuana which is illegal in Alabama and steroids. Williams, 24, will be charged with trafficking a controlled substance and possession of a substance. Sheriff Heath Taylor believes Williams has been involved in drug trafficking his entire time with the department.

"We work our life for the citizens and for the people and one person doing something like this ruins it for everyone because the public loses faith in their department," said Sheriff Heath Taylor. Williams will be transported to the Lee County Sheriff's office Wednesday evening.

Sheriff Taylor broke the news during an afternoon news conference that began at 3p et. WRBL.com and News 3 will have updates as more information becomes available.
