DURHAM, N.C. -

Parties near Duke University have neighbors turning to police and the university.

People who live in some of the neighborhoods near campus are complaining about noise and trash from parties held by students.

Some of the neighbors have tried getting to know the students in recent months; while that worked for some, others were not satisfied.

So to find a solution for the parties, a group of about two dozen neighbors met last week with Durham police, as well as representatives from the city and university.

"We stand prepared to respond to their complaints,” said Sue Wasiolek, dean of students at Duke. “If we are made aware of their concerns, we will investigate, we will talk with the students who are alleged to be engaged in this behavior and we will hold them accountable -- if appropriate -- through our code of conduct on campus."

A follow-up meeting may be planned.
