Principal of Double Churches Middle School passes away

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Muscogee County School District is mourning the loss of Double Churches Middle School Principal Chris Cox. Cox passed away at the Midtown Medical Center Wednesday evening.

"It’s an emotional day for students and staff of Double Churches Middle School, and all who loved him," says assistant principal Dawn Harper. "Mr. Cox touched the hearts and lives of many people across the district. His dedication, commitment, and contribution to children, education, faculty and staff will never be forgotten."

"He was truly a member of a much larger family with the Muscogee County School District," said at large board member Cathy Williams.

The flags at Double Churches Middle School were flying at half staff Thursday morning as students faculty and staff paid their respects to a beloved principal. They also reflected on memories of Cox during a moment of silence Thursday morning.

Chris Cox had been with the Muscogee County School District since August of 9181. He was a teacher at Rothschild Middle School for 21 years. Afterwards he served for a year as a Double Churches Middle School teacher before being promoted to assistant principal at Rothschild.

At large school board member Cathy Williams says Cox was a team player who was always willing to pursue the next opportunity in education.

"He always had his eye on success. He had a passion for public education like so many of our district employees do but he was such a team player and did it with such enthusiasm," said Williams.

Cox was appointed as Double Churches Middle School Principal in July of 2012. His middle school was in school board member John Wells' district. Wells says Cox was a true leader at Double Churches.

"He was a very personable individual and he was very well like and I enjoyed his company. It was a real pleasure having him be part of the leadership of our school district," said Wells.

Wells says Cox made a positive difference in the lives of his students at the middle school.

"Our time with him was profitable. He made a difference in the lives of our students and it's going to be hard to replace him," said Wells.

Cox's funeral will take place Saturday April 19th at Solid Rock Assembly of God. There will be a visitation at 3:30 pm and the funeral will start at 4:00pm. After the funeral there will be a private burial in Waverly hall. At 6:00 pm the family will be at Midland Middle School to receive friends and family.

Students were scheduled to take the math portion of the Criterion Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT) today. The Georgia Department of Education has granted a waiver for students at Double Churches Middle School, which allows the test to be postponed until Monday.
