CARY, N.C. -

The man accused of killing three people in attacks at a Jewish community center in Kansas has ties to North Carolina.

Frazier Glenn Cross, 73 is a former Ku Klux Klan leader who now faces murder charges. During the late 1980s he was known in the Triangle as a man who lead the white supremacist group known as the White Patriot Party

Cross and his group would walk the streets of downtown Raleigh carrying Confederate flags and wearing white robes.

Former radio reporter Cash Michaels said Cross, who used to go by the name of Frazier Glenn Miller, was always in the media threatening a race war.

Michaels said there was a certain amount of fear among minorities of the White Patriot Party might do.

"In 1987, he was someone that folks really paid attention to. They were really concerned about what could happen," said Michaels. "It's always shocking when people lose their lives, and I almost said randomly, but it's not random because they were shot because of who they were supposed to be."

Cross now faces charges of premeditated murder.
