ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - Armstrong Atlantic State University senior Dalton Johnson's RBI fielder's choice in the top of the 10th inning helped the Pirates defeat Flagler College, 3-2, and complete a Peach Belt Conference baseball sweep of the Saints on Sunday afternoon at Drysdale Field.
The Pirates (22-14, 13-11 PBC) swept their second straight Peach Belt series and ran their win streak to seven with the extra-inning victory, while Flagler (18-24, 9-18 PBC) saw its current losing stretch reach nine with the loss.
Flagler took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning on a leadoff triple by Andrew Brodbeck and an RBI groundball to short by Joe Post. The Saints stretched that lead to 2-0 in the fifth on an RBI single by Post, but the Pirates answered in the bottom of the sixth on Dalton Johnson's solo home run leading off the inning to make the score 2-1.
Armstrong tied things up in the bottom of the eighth on Cody Sherlin's two-out RBI single to center field, which sent the game into extra innings. In the top of the 10th, Zach Lance led off the frame with a walk. A sacrifice by Berry Aldridge moved him to second, then Matt Wisniewski walked while Lance moved to third on a wild pitch. Johnson then hit a grounder to second that brought Lance home with the winning run.
Tyler Green (2-2) hurled four innings of one-hit shutout ball, walking two while striking out two to notch the win for the Pirates in relief. Michael Hanke (0-1) took the loss in relief for the Saints, giving up two hits and two runs in 4 1/3 innings of work, walking one while striking out five.
Dalton went 2-for-4 with two RBIs while Sherlin went 2-for-5 with an RBI to lead Armstrong at the plate. Flagler was led by Brodbeck's 3-for-5 day.
Armstrong returns to action on Tuesday, April 15, traveling to Albany State for a 6:30 p.m. non-conference contest with the Rams.
