Gubernatorial candidate, Jason Carter, visits Columbus

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. - Business leaders, community members, and The Young Democrats of Georgia spent some time with Democratic Governor hopeful, Jason Carter, Saturday afternoon. New's 3's Naomi Keitt caught up with Carter between stops Saturday and says his campaign is focused on educational opportunities across the state.

"We're really exited about where Georgia can be, but we don't feel like we're on the right track to get there," said Jason Carter.

Democratic Gubernatorial candidate Jason Carter says education is the way to grow the economy and move the state forward.

"We have to have an economy that's prosperous for people throughout the economy and the only way we'll get there, the only way we'll get a growing vibrant middle class is with a high quality education system with good teachers that are well supported in their classrooms," said Carter.

He met with small business leaders, entrepreneurs and African American tech leaders on Saturday to talk about education and what Columbus needs from state government. Carter says Columbus is a vibrant and growing community where educational investments need to be protected.

"You can tell that it's on the verge of really exploding forward. The state plays a big role here. Columbus State University is a big part of the state," said Carter.

He says it's crucial to do the educational work to grow the economy and the state. His opponent Republican incumbent Nathan Deal has also touted education as a top priority. Deal's campaign literature says under his leadership the Hope scholarship is thriving and Georgia's Pre-K program has been restored to a full day. Governor Deal will visit Columbus on Tuesday. He's signing 3 bills into law at the National Infantry Museum. Those bill relate to military families.

    Heat and humidity continue

The bulk of the rain has been well to our west today and will stay that way for the duration of tonight and tomorrow. We'll only see an isolated shower or storm the next few days due to most of the tropical moisture lifting well north of us. That's all due to an area of low pressure in the upper Midwest that is sucking it all north. This will leave us on the warm and humid side of things, which is why isolated showers and storms are in the forecast the next few days.
