CVCC Pirates named Athletes of the Week

PHENIX CITY, Ala. -

The Chattahoochee Valley Pirates continue to be one of the premiere junior college programs in the country, and are the winners of the Headquarter Nissan Athletes of the Week award.

Head coach Adam Thomas says he’s had some good teams during his tenure, but thinks this might be the best.

“[We] just want to keep winning games if we can,” said Pirate pitcher Mitch Shelly. “Have a lot of momentum going into the tournament, do big things there, where it all matters.”

CVCC is 31-7 on the season, and beat the Thomas University JV 23-0 combined in a doubleheader, where the Pirates threw a combined no-hitter in the second game.

“We worked very hard all fall and really got after it in the weight room and created a competitive environment right off the bat,” said pitcher Hunter Mitchell. “That’s really made it a lot of fun to get out here and compete every day.”

“I feel great about the season we’re having,” said outfielder J.D. Perry. “You can’t really ask much more from the guys and what they’re doing out there. They show up every day and play, and that’s all you can ask.”

The Pirates began the week ranked fourth in the country, but moved up to no. 2 in the latest NJCAA poll, released Tuesday.

“It’s about finishing strong, and that’s something we want to do,” Thomas said. “We didn’t do that last year. [We] had a great year, but that’s something we want to do, finish the right way. Good Lord willing, we will.”

CVCC travels to Alexander City to face defending national champion Central Alabama on Friday.
