Heartbleed Bug Puts Servers and Personal Information At Risk

Posted: Updated:
SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. -

The “Heartbleed Bug” is worrying computer users nationwide and websites are doing all they can to secure their servers and protect sensitive information.

Computer expert and Systems Administrator at USC Upstate Kevin Hodges told 7 On Your Side that your passwords, credit card information and personal data are stored on website servers. Sites that have sensitive data might be an e-commerce site or any one that you sell or buy products from and they could be compromised.

Here’s why:

That information is encrypted Hodges said so typically no one can understand it. Now with the Heartbleed bug, hackers send a code to a server and can unscramble it’s encrypted code.

To keep your personal information safe, avoid using the same passwords for multiple sites, change passwords frequently and avoid entering sensitive info into a site for the next few days.

Hackers said this vulnerability has been in existence for more than two years and was only recently discovered.

Once a hacker has a username and password, more information can be compromised.

"They're going to try it, against any site that they can find that username and password would work on they're going to try it. They have ways of trying thousands of sites in seconds," said Hodges.

Many sites like Yahoo and the popular site Tumblr have been repaired for the most part but a server isn’t secure until the new updated security is downloaded on that site.

Hodges said changing your password won't protect your information on those sites.

We've worked with experts to find a website that will tell you if a site you want to visit is secure.
