LC Gas Prices Jump, Worry Drivers

Posted: Updated:
Hardeeville, SC -

Drivers in the lowcountry are feeling some pain at the pump.

According to AAA the price of gas has jumped 17cents in the last month.

Are folks in the lowcountry concerned about tourism now that the price of gas is creeping up again?

"No its not a concern, people are coming to Heritage, ticket sales are going well. And if you're looking at the past as the best predictor of the future, those rising gas prices have not had an impact on people coming to Heritage or the rest of the season on Hilton Head Island," said Charlie Clark, of the Hilton Head-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce.

Hardeeville gas station owner, Rick Patel doesn't think this is the end of the price hikes, which could hurt his business.

"Volume will go down a little bit on gas, but it wont impact me that much, regardless people are going to have to travel from one place to another."

While business owners, and those predicting the upcoming tourist season may not be concerned about the increase, they should be. Drivers say they're definitely going to have to start budgeting and watching their vacation plans.

Drivers like Dave Sampson, will spend more than $150 to fill the tanks of his two cars. He says he's going to have to budget in order to make that work.

"Don't go out to eat as much, kinda eat more at home, I fish more. Try to do more stuff at home and not outside as much, cause you gotta go from one place to another and make it back home."

And he may not even be able to vacation this summer.

"We were trying to make a trip to New York, but because of gas prices and the economy, it kind of falls us back but you know we'll adapt to it and hopefully make that trip to see our family soon."
