Columbia Approves Stadium - Savannah on the Clock

Historic Grayson Stadium Historic Grayson Stadium

Late Tuesday night Columbia City Council approved the second reading of the Bull Street Stadium Agreement... clearing the way to bring Minor League Baseball to South Carolina's capital.

After more than four hours of meeting, Columbia City Council voted 4-3 to move forward with building a stadium complex on the Bull Street downtown property.  Now the big question remains: Which team will relocate to Columbia?

Savannah Sand Gnats owner Jason Freier (Hardball Capital) has said many times that he'd like to keep the team in Savannah, but not without a new stadium built to replace Historic Grayson Stadium.  He would seek to buy another team if Savannah is truly committed to a new ballpark.

Columbia approved the Stadium License Agreement in March, but Council bylaws require a second reading to make it official.

Savannah City Council currently has seven Request for Proposals (RFP) to move forward with a full scale study to determine where and at what cost it would be to build a new stadium in Savannah.  A decision to move forward with one of the proposals should be made in the coming weeks.

Freier also says that if the City of Savannah shows in good faith they are moving forward toward his ultimate goal, he would extend the lease at Grayson Stadium for one more year.  The Current lease runs out at the end of the 2014 Sand Gnats' season.
