Patriot Guard Riders to escort bodies of Tampa Bay Ft. Hood shooting victims

TAMPA, FL (WFLA) - Florida's Patriot Guard Riders will honor two Fort Hood shooting victims Friday by escorting their remains from Tampa International Airport to local funeral homes.

Sgt. Daniel Ferguson, 39, and Sgt. Carlos Lazaney Rodriguez, 38, were among three people killed when a gunman opened fire at the Texas army base on April 2.

The families of the slain soldiers invited the Patriot Guard Riders to escort their remains.

The body of Sgt. Carlos Lazaney Rodriguez is scheduled to arrive at 3:58 p.m. The body of Sgt. Daniel Ferguson is scheduled to arrive at 6:50 p.m.

A funeral service for Sgt. Carlos Lazaney Rodriguez will be held Monday at the Blount & Curry Funeral Home-MacDill Avenue Chapel in Tampa. A funeral service for Sgt. Daniel Ferguson will be held Saturday at the Resurrection Catholic Church in Lakeland.

The Patriot Guard Riders is a bike club that provides support to the families of fallen soldiers and first responders. Their mission is to show respect for fallen heroes, their families and their communities and shield them from interruptions caused by protestors.

Patriot Guard Riders' motorcycle escorts are loud, colorful and emotional. People often line the sides of the street waving flags and saluting in a show of respect when Patriot Guard Riders escort a soldier's remains.

Friday, April 11

  • At 5:50 p.m. Sgt. Daniel Ferguson's body will be escorted from Tampa International Airport at 4100 George J Bean Inbound Pkwy in Tampa to Lakeland Funeral Home & Memorial Gardens at 2125 Bartow Road in Lakeland. The Polk County Sheriff's Office says that the tentative route will be from Tampa International Airport to FL 60 East to Interstate 275 to Interstate 4 and then to FL 546/W Memorial Boulevard. to N. Florida Avenue to Bartow Road.
Saturday, April 12

  • The Patriot Guard Riders will escort the family at the 11 a.m. service for Sgt. Daniel Ferguson at the Resurrection Catholic Church at 3720 Old Hwy 37 in Lakeland.

  • After the church service, the Patriot Guard Riders will escort the body of Sgt. Daniel Ferguson from the Resurrection Catholic Church at 3720 Old Hwy 37 in Lakeland to the Florida National Cemetery at 6502 SW 102nd Ave. in Bushnell. The Polk County Sheriff's Office says that the tentative route will be from the church to Polk Parkway to Interstate 4, then to Interstate 75 and then on to the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell.
