St. Aug's to announce leadership changes Monday

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

Saint Augustine's University is expected to announce a leadership change at the school Monday.

St. Aug's Board of Trustees Chairman Rodney Gaddy will be joined by National Alumni Association president Pattye Brown Monday at 10 a.m. to announce a leadership change at the university "as well as share the vision of the Board of Trustees for the future of the institution."

Last week, university president Dianne Boardley Suber announced that changes were coming after a 2013 audit shed light on issues of ineffective oversight in the areas of financial and grants management in the school.

Enrollment at St. Aug's has fallen by 27 percent in the past 14 years, and the university blames its $3 million debt on a drop in tuition revenue. The school is also facing litigation and has furloughed or fired employees.

"We are at a critical juncture in both the University's present and future and we need to be vigilant in assuring that every administrator on the team shares both the mission and the vision of the university," Suber said on Thursday.

The following day, Suber -- who has lead the historically black school for the last 14 years -- announced her intention to retire in May.

Also last week, the University received a letter from its accrediting body, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, who said it was taking a closer look at the financial situation at the school.

SACS has given St. Aug's until mid-April to show it financials for review. SACS the power to either put the school on probation or revoke accreditation, which could lead to the school closing its doors.

In 2002, the school was put on probation by the university's accrediting body because of financial discrepancies.
