RALEIGH, N.C. - Some volunteers hope to raise awareness about mental health using art.

Sunday afternoon, crews with the National Alliance on Mental Illness spent hours decorating the corner of Lake Boone Trail and Blue Ridge Road in Raleigh with irises.

The display is a re-creation of Van Gogh's painting, "The Irises," a masterpiece he made when he was institutionalized with a mental illness.

Crews said the display gets people talking and thinking about their mental health.

"The more people that are aware that it's OK to say you're depressed or that you have a problem, then they will receive treatment and that will really help," said Ann Akland, former president of NAMI Wake County, .

The irises will stay up through April 13.
