Families remember fallen soldiers at rededication ceremony

Posted: Updated:
FORT BENNING, Ga. - Hundreds of family and friends spent Saturday afternoon honoring their fallen loved ones at a rededication ceremony on Fort Benning. News 3's Naomi Keitt tells us more about the renovated Hall of Heroes.

Nicole DiCenzo lost her husband in 2006.

"Doug was very active. He loved life. When the news came that first nights, I kept looking at a picture that was mounted on my tv entertainment center and he was holding Dek and he was just full of life," said Nicole DiCenzo.

She remembers when she first heard the news of his untimely death.

"When the news came, it was just wrong. It was like how can he not be here. He was just so smiley and so active," said DiCenzo.

Nicole's late husband is just of the 109 service members who are represented on the walls in the Hall of Heroes. She was one of the featured speakers at the rededication ceremony and reminded the audience to never forget the sacrifice their loved ones made. The hall originally opened in 2011 but last year the Survivor Outreach Services decided to improve the center. Renovations finished up Friday to provide a more professional atmosphere for gold star families to remember the ones they lost.

"I think it's a place that gives them an understanding that we still care about these soldiers and family members. That we do care about who they are and S.O.S. is here for them as long as they need our help and assistance and this just gives some permanence to that," said Ron Smith, coordinator of S.O.S.

Nicole agrees.

"I can see where people would come here just to sit and just look at their loved ones and just remember. I think this is a beautiful thing that they did," said DiCenzo.

Major General H.R. McMaster opened the ceremony Saturday afternoon. There were more than 200 family members who viewed the renovated hall Saturday.
