Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police said a 12-year-old has been charged in the Friday night shooting death of an 11-year-old playmate in west Savannah.

Spokesman, Julian Miller, said the boys were handling a gun at a house on the 1400 block of Church Street when it fired about 9 p.m. 11-year-old Montrez Burroughs was struck and died at Memorial University Medical Center.

The 12-year-old has been charged with involuntary manslaughter, reckless conduct and possession of a firearm by a person under 18 and was being held at the Regional Youth Detention Center.

Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department Violent Crimes detectives continue to investigate.

Burroughs' family said the two children were relatives as well as playmates. The 11 year-old was born in Savannah, but just moved to Florida, and was back in town visiting.

Cousin Denisha Coppock said she can't believe the lively young boy is gone.

"Your life is precious like that, it can be taken away just like that, because I just seen him 15 minutes before that, and it happened so fast," said Coppock.

Coppock said his death leaves a big void.

"Very hard, especially for the younger ones, some of his friends, and people that we know from the church," said Coppock.

Burroughs' family said he leaves a lot of memories behind like his love of sports and rap.

"Montrez wasn't the type of child to get suspended from school with you know getting in trouble. He's a good boy. He's respectable you know, he was a loving, happy child all the time," said Aunt Shaleena Hamilton.

Aunt Shaleena Hamilton said she doesn't understand how a gun ended up being in the room with the two children.

"You never have a gun in the house around children unless you are going to keep it safe and locked and put away or you teach your children a gun is in the house don't touch it," said Hamilton.

Coppock said she doesn't know if her family will ever feel whole again.

"He's a missing piece of the puzzle," said Coppock.

Funeral arrangements have not been set up yet for 11-year-old Montrez Burroughs.
