Saturday Tutorial Program in need of volunteers

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. - A Muscogee County organization is offering free Saturday tutoring to students around the community but News 3's Naomi Keitt says they are in need of many volunteer tutors. She caught up with the group Saturday morning and tells us more about the C.C.S.C. Tutorial Program.

The students spend Saturday morning from 10 a.m. until noon in the cafeteria of Rosthchild Leadership Academy to get free help from volunteer tutors throughout the community.

"I teach them what they are supposed to know in class, but also something that might help them more," said Amiah Hartman, a high school volunteer.

The program has been around for more than 30 years. It was founded it 1983 by the late Lonnie Jackson. This year, they need your help. Volunteer tutors and funds are the most vital things for this program to keep it's door open to serve the community.

"The more knowledge you can acquire the better you can perform in the world and it opens doors and gateways to better opportunities, to better jobs, better ways of life. So I think that it's wonderful," said Tamara Comer, a volunteer tutor.

Tutors say they have seen tremendous growth in students. Report cards which used to show D's and F's now proudly display A's. The students also enjoy the experience.

"I get to work and have fun," said Amya Thomas, a 4th grade student.

Even the tutors get excited to see their students succeed.

"They always want to learn. They're always determined to help themselves get education. They're always happy to be here it seems like," sai Kiser Lesaida high school volunteer.

The program has helped nearly 30,000 students over the past 31 years. Volunteers are need for reading, math and academic subjects. They are looking for active and retired teachers and administrators, paraprofessionals, fraternities, sororities, college graduates, college students, high school graduates, high school students, middle school honor roll students, peer helpers, parents and representatives from organizations and other businesses. If you are interested helping you can contact Tresa Hart-Williams at 706-315-8847 or Lonya Jackson-Sarden at 706-315-9844. They are also in need of funding. If you would like to donate you can call the numbers provided or email C.C.S.C. at ccsc270@aol.com. They also invite you to come by Rothschild Leadership Academy's cafeteria between 10 a.m. and noon on Saturdays.
