Man who rammed Raleigh Police car jumps to death in jail

RALEIGH, N.C. -

A Wake County inmate who rammed his truck into a Raleigh Police car in February committed suicide Saturday when he ran up to the second floor of the Wake County Jail and jumped from the second story to his death.

Max Felton Mitchell, 53, died at 11:05 a.m. at the jail on Hammond Road. He gave an officer a note that was essentially a suicide note and then raced to the second floor and jumped.

Mitchell had been charged in February after his pickup truck collided with a Raleigh Police cruiser as officers were attempting to stop the drive of the truck in connection with a domestic assault on a female.

The officers attempted to stop the truck at the February incident, but the driver refused to stop. After traveling a short distance, police say the driver crossed the center line and struck a Raleigh Police Department patrol car that was stopped in the opposite lane at the intersection of Poole and St. George roads.

The driver of the police vehicle involved in the crash, Officer L.N. Yesh, 24, was transported to WakeMed for treatment of her injuries.

Mitchell was taken into custody and transported to WakeMed by Raleigh Police.

Mitchell was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury in connection with his collision. He is also charged with assault on a law enforcement officer inflicting serious injury in connection with an ankle injury sustained by another officer, and assault on a law enforcement officer inflicting injury for a hand injury sustained by a third officer.

The two officers were injured while trying to detain Mitchell following the accident.

He was also charged with DWI, careless and reckless driving, and driving while license revoked.

In the matter of the domestic assault, Mitchell was charged with assault on a female, communicating threats and violation of a domestic violence protective order.
