2nd case of rabies reported in Cumberland Co.

Posted: Updated:
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Results from a test performed on dead raccoon confirms the second positive result for rabies in Cumberland County this year.

A raccoon was picked up on Friday, March 21 at Troy Drive in east Fayetteville after a resident reported that several stray dogs were fighting with the raccoon on the night of March 20. The raccoon was found Friday morning and animal control was then contacted.

Animal control officers will be in the area where the raccoon was found to notify residents about the positive rabies result and to warn them that the stray dogs are still on the loose.

A rabid raccoon was reported in northern Cumberland County earlier in March.

All pet owners are urged to check the vaccination status of their pets. For the pets that are not vaccinated or are due for a booster shot, they should be taken to a veterinarian immediately to be vaccinated.

The county will hold rabies vaccination clinics in April on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-6 p.m. at various locations.
