Cool School: Wynnton Arts Academy

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. - Student's at a local elementary school experience a "dramatic" difference in education every day through their fine arts curriculum. News Three's Naomi Keitt shows us inside this week's cool school, Wynnton Arts Academy.

You may have driven down Wynnton road and wondered about the sprawling white building. It's not a museum, it's a Muscogee County fine arts school where 250 elementary aged children learn dance, art, and music along with their regular subjects.

"I feel excited to come to school and have a safe, fun time," said 3rd grade student Aidan Brown.

Student's in the drama class are perfecting their acting skills at the same time, they're learning the proper use of prepositional phrases.

"In drama, our teacher is so silly. She's funny. She's creative and if we are shy, if we don't want to do it, she helps us to get out of that shy mood and just be able to express ourselves," said 5th grade student Sanaa Phillips.

Dance students are practicing their moves while learning Native American stories. Each year the school holds an art exhibition where every student creates a work of art and parents, family, and friends acn come and view the pieces. They Wynnton Family Arts Association purchases the most outstanding 5th grade piece of art and pays the student for it.

"It's their first piece of art that they sell and we display it in the office each year," said Carolyn Mull, Principal of Wynnton Arts Academy.

Over their elementary school years, students get a lot of practical advice from their teachers. One fifth grade student shares what she has learned.

"Just to be brave students and be able to do a lot of things in the world. Go pursue your dreams. Go after your dreams. Be yourself, express yourself and just have fun but at the same time, be focused," said Phillips.
