Welcome to Garbage Island

New York City has a lot of people, and a lot of people creates a lot of trash.  As a matter of fact, NYC residents produce 11-thousand tons of garbage every single day!

To keep this trash from piling up, experts now have a plan to install a giant 'garbage island' off Manhattan.  Only this 'garbage island' won't be an eye sore.  It will have public parks on top of it.

The plan calls for organic gardens and even cross country ski areas for the winter.

Right below, however, will be composting areas that would process organic waste.

The firm behind the plans is Present Architecture.  They say the park would process 30 percent of the city's waste and add 125 acres of public park land.  They say the benefits include reduced truck miles to landfills, decreased traffic, noise, and pollution, with the added benefits of safer streets, cleaner air, and fewer greenhouse gas emissions.

Now the firm hopes the city will back its plan.
