One Killed, One Injured in Hilton Head Island Crash

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. -

The South Carolina Highway Patrol has identified the person killed in single car crash early Tuesday morning on Hilton Head Island.

Officials say 43-year-old Jerome Eric Stewart was pronounced dead on the scene, the condition of the female passenger is unknown at this time.

According to Highway Patrol, a 1996 Lincoln model car ran off of the left side of Highway 278 near Shelter Cove Plaza, as it was traveling west and struck a tree in the median at 2:19 a.m. 

The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office assisted Highway Patrol at the scene. They report the male driver of the car was killed, and the female passenger was airlifted to Savannah Memorial Hospital with unknown injuries. 

Highway Patrol says the driver was not wearing a seatbelt. The collision remains under investigation.
