GRANTSBORO, N.C. - The Pamlico County Fire Marshal tells 9 On Your Side an elderly man is dead following a house fire in Pamlico County.

The fire started around 1:40 Saturday morning at 1049 Prescott Road in the Grantsboro community. The split level home had heavy flames coming through the roof.

Fire Marshal Chris Murray says 80-year-old Phillip M. Prescott, Sr. was trapped inside a second story bedroom. Once crews got Prescott out of the home, he was pronounced dead.

Prescott's long time friend, Charles Autry, says he had to come to the home after hearing the news.

" He was a good man. He was a good man, a good honest man," said Autry.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Pamlico County Fire Marshal's Office along with the Sheriff's Office and agents with the State Bureau of Investigation.
