FIRST ON 3: Fort Benning teacher accused of helping students cheat

Posted: Updated:
FORT BENNING, Ga. -

An investigation is underway at Fort Benning after reports a teacher helped students cheat on the annual Terra Nova test at an elementary school on post.

The Terra Nova test is a standardized achievement test, used by many Department of Defense schools. The Fort Benning public affairs office was unaware of the incident when we reached out to them for a comment on Tuesday. After checking with the superintendent's office - they confirmed that an investigation is indeed underway, and that letters are being sent out to parents. The investigation is being conducted by an assistant superintendent who is not from Fort Benning.

Christy Cabezas, superintendent of schools in the Georgia and Alabama district, released a statement that reads:

"I have received an allegation of impropriety with the recent administration of the Terra Nova test at Fort Benning school. Upon receiving this allegation I immediately assigned Georgia/Alabama District Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Sue Burdick, to begin to aggressive investigation into the allegation. Where the allegation was made, parents of students have been notified."

The letter goes on to say:

"Test booklets in question are being held until the investigation is completed. I am very concerned that this may have occurred and take this matter very seriously. In all of our Fort Benning schools we have very strict test security and continuously emphasize and train on the importance of proper testing procedures. Once this investigation is completed, we will carefully review the report. If impropriety is confirmed, we will take swift, appropriate action."

The public affairs office did not identify which school was being investigated, nor would they say how many students might be affected. They also didn't say how long the investigation might take.

A Fort Benning parent told News 3 she received an automated phone message Tuesday, informing her about the alleged testing problems at one of the schools. That message said the testing booklets were being held for review. The message also said if the allegations prove true, the school system would take swift and appropriate action.

News 3 will continue to follow this developing story and bring you more information as it becomes available.
