Burglary call leads to marijuana grow house in Plant City

Posted: Updated:
PLANT CITY, FL (WFLA) - A burglary call in Hillsborough County led deputies to the discovery of a marijuana grow house.

Just before noon on March 7th, deputies responded to a burglary call on Knights Griffin Road in Plant City by a witness who reported seeing a van seeing two men dropped off at a home.

Deputies arrived at the home and were able to track down the two suspects, Yunel Hernandez-Carrera and Leonardo Benito Catala, with the help of K-9. Deputies then tracked down the van and arrested the driver Yenisleidy Moreno-Morgan and other two men involved.

All three were arrested and charged with Possession of Burglary Tools and Burglary of an Unoccupied Structure.

In a search of the detached garage, deputies found the marijuana grow. HCSO says there were a total of 66 large marijuana plants growing in pots seized as well as equipment used to manufacture it.

The marijuana had a total weight of 220 pounds with an estimated street value of $265,000, according to HCSO.

The Sheriff's Office says TECO also responded and located an illegal electricity connection providing $10,000 in unmetered, stolen electricity to the garage.

The tenant of the home, Luis Alvarez-Alonso, was arrested and charged with Trafficking in Marijuana, Manufacture of Marijuana, Own, Lease or Rent for Purpose of Trafficking, Grand Theft Third Degree (Electricity).
