One injured after Opelika police-involved shooting

Posted: Updated:
OPELIKA, Ala. - One person was injured after a police officer-involved shooting on Interstate 85 in Opelika Thursday evening.

Around 7:15p ct, Officer Phillip Hancock fired his weapon at a person along Interstate 85, police Captain Bruce DeLong said in a news release on behalf of Opelika Police Chief John McEachern III. Details regarding the extent of injuries sustained by the person shot were not immediately publicly available. The shooting happened in the northbound lanes of the interstate between the Torbert Road and West Point Parkway exits. Authorities did not immediately say what caused the shooting.

The Alabama Department of Investigation is reviewing the shooting. State agencies often assist local agencies with officer-involved shooting investigations to avoid any local conflict of interest.

Sgt. Steve Jarrett of the Alabama Department of Public Safety said the ABI would not be providing any public information about the ongoing investigation. He would only say that state investigators will be sending their findings to the District Attorney's office once complete.

Officer Hancock has worked with the Opelika Police Department for 7 years. He has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the conclusion of the state investigation.
