Job Watch: Which sectors are hiring in Georgia?

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. - Of all the places where jobs are advertised, there's one that almost-all employers use -- the Internet. That's where we saw that Whitewater Express is hiring about 25 new employees for the upcoming season.

“It's great to give people their 2nd or 3rd job, and a lot of people that are in college in the summer, it's great to give them an opportunity to make money and have good time doing it,” says Lucas Brown, Whitewater Express Director of Operations.

Our Internet search revealed wide-ranging of job openings, from just about every industry, from leisure and hospitality like Whitewater Express to healthcare jobs like at St. Francis or Columbus Regional. The Georgia Department of Labor says January was a positive month for most job fields.

“Well that's the best news, we saw positive job numbers across every major sector except for one- which was government,” says Mark Butler, the Georgia Department of Labor Commissioner.

Butler says the following fields saw the most job growth in January:
  • Transportation and Warehousing
  • Leisure and Hospitality
  • Professional and Business Services
  • Education and Health Care
The job growth also positively affects local economies. For Whitewater Express, they're able to take more trips down the river because of their hiring surge, which will attract more people to the Columbus-area.

“We're planning on doing something around 30,000 people this year, that's what we hope to do. So that's 30,000-plus people coming to Columbus all summer long,” says Brown.
