SSU Confirms They Contacted Mike McQueary for Coaching Position

Last Summer newly hired Savannah State University football coach Earnest Wilson, III reached out and contacted former Penn State quarterback and assistant coach Mike McQueary for the position at SSU of QB coach.

McQueary's name surfaced this week in regards to SSU,  in an ESPN.com article on his abuse as a child and his quest to earn a job back in the college ranks.

Savannah State Athletics Director Sterling Steward, Jr. confirmed to WSAV's Ken Slats that Wilson contacted McQueary in July as the school put together a staff.  After "vetting" the process, administration determined that with the current situation McQueary was in with regards with the Penn State Child Abuse Scandal, that "this would derail us or prevent us from gaining momentum with our football program," says Steward, Jr.

He added that the administration "looked at what occurred and just didn't want any distractions to the football program."  He added that SSU just wasn't prepared to handle that situation.

"We were looking to move forward without any negativity," says Steward, Jr., reached by phone Wednesday evening.

Wilson, III was an assistant coach at Penn State while McQueary was a quarterback his freshman and sophomore seasons.
