Cool School Baker Middle School

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. - A Muscogee County Middle School gives their students an extra hour every single day to explore new skills and opportunities. News Three's Naomi Keitt takes us inside this week's Cool School Baker Middle School.

From 9:35 a.m. to 10:35 a.m. Monday thru Friday, the middle school students at Baker have Lions Block.

"My favorite part of Baker Middle School is Lions Block because it helps you with your career and in your future," said 7th grade student Cielo Luna.

"It teaches you the thing that you're actually good at and amazing. You learn new cool things," said 6th grade student Christina Luckey.

Students spend the hour in their day in a variety of enrichment or remediation classes. The enrichment courses like technology education, forensic science or 21st century teach students new skills and allow them to explore new activities during the school day. Students in the technology course are learning to sketch bridge designs and create them with a variety of materials. They are also working on a solar paneled car.

"When I started building this car I got excited and I wanted to become an engineer to build cars and all that," said 8th grade student Bryan Nieves.

This week forensic science students were learning about DNA and disarming bombs, and the production class worked on their daily morning newscast for the student body. Even the parents have a special room inside Baker Middle School to help their students succeed.

"We have a lot of brochures. We have a lot of books, dictionaries in both languages, english and spanish. It's something they can use daily," said Baker Middle School parent Tamara Nievs.

Students who go above and beyond are also rewarded for their positive behavior with baker bucks. They get these throughout the month and are able to cash in for goodies at the Baker store.

"The Baker store I think that's pretty unique. At my old school we usually didn't have anything like this so the Baker store really stands out," said 8th grade student Prince Branson.

Students and teachers enjoy the many opportunities of the school and the encouraging environment that allows students to reach their full potential.
