Savannah Chatham Animal Control Revamping Volunteer Program

Posted: Updated:

Volunteers play an integral role in helping staff with numerous jobs at Savannah Chatham Animal Control. But, Unit Commander Lt. Cary Hill says the way they provide that help needs to be streamlined and better organized in order to provide a better experience for both the shelter staff and the volunteers themselves.

Lt. Hill says the shelter normally has one to three volunteers working on an average day. He says in the past, those volunteers would show up at unscheduled times and be put to work wherever they might be needed at the moment.  But he says that could sometimes be frustrating for both volunteers and staff as time was sometimes wasted figuring out what jobs the volunteers were needed to perform that day.

So now, there won't be any volunteers over the next month as shelter staff work to revamp the volunteer program.

All potential volunteers are being asked to fill out new applications indicating their area of interest at the shelter, so they can be better matched with jobs they enjoy in areas where shelter staff have determined they need help.

Schedules will also be devised to allow shelter staff to determine what help is coming and when. The new program is expected to be up and running in early to mid-April. The Shelter is also planning to add an Assistant Volunteer Program Coordinator.

If you would like to volunteer at the shelter you can email Jodi Lewis at or Christina Sutherin at to be placed on the notification list when the new applications are available.
