SELMA, N.C. -

A 16-year-old girl died after her car ran off the road and became submerged in a creek, authorities said.

Lanie Margaret Bizzell, of Selma, was traveling northbound on Highway 96 north of Selma around 8 a.m Sunday when the accident happened. Exactly what led to it, isn't yet known.

Bizzell died at the scene, troopers said.

She lived about a quarter of a mile from the scene of the accident, and was headed by herself to church.

"It's a tragic collision," Trooper T.L. Garner said. "I went to her parents house. There were a lot of people there. Very, very, very sad."

Speed and alcohol are not believed to be factors in the incident.

Sunday night, friends gathered at a church in Clayton to remember Bizzell.

"Lanie was probably the sweetest kindest girl. She had the kindest heart," said one teen entering the service.
