Mayor Teresa Tomlinson kicks off her re-election campaign Saturday

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. - Columbus' 69th mayor kicked off her re-election campaign Saturday afternoon. News Three's Naomi Keitt tells us the mayor talked about the city's improvements over the last 3 years.

"Teresa works. Teresa works," chanted the crowd.

More than 300 people showed up to Mayor Teresa Tomlinson's campaign headquarters on Macon Road in Columbus to show their support for the city's 69th mayor. Several speakers talked about Tomlinson's influence in the city and in their lives.

"People know that we are intelligent and progressive and forward thinking because she is intelligent and progressive and forward thinking," said Audrey Tillman.

Mayor Tomlinson discussed economic development, the decreased unemployment rate, and job creation.

"We've had one the best job creation performances in the state of Georgia with Wellpoint, NCR, Hostess, Pratt & Whitney and many other companies coming down the pipe. We are creating jobs in Columbus, Georgia," said Tomlinson.

The mayor also touched on crime in our communities.

"2011, 2012, 2013 were the 3 lowest crime rates we've had in Columbus, Georgia in 10 years but folks let me tell you something, that's not good enough," said Tomlinson.

She says they are working to reduce crime across the city. Her opponent Colin Martin, who announced his candidacy in early January, is focusing his campaign "Hold on Help is on the Way" on crime. He's hoping to lower the crime rates in the city and make Columbus a safer place to live.

The qualifying period starts Monday at 9 a.m. The election will take place on Tuesday, May 20th. WRBL will host a series of debates during the election cycle. The first one will take place on April 21st at 7 p.m. at Columbus State. Both mayoral candidates will participate.
