RALEIGH, N.C. -

Build it and they will come. Let them build it, and they'll still come.

Lego KidsFest kicked off Friday at the Raleigh Convention Center.

The sold-out show, which is expected to draw more than 27,000 to downtown Raleigh, features life-sized creations of superheroes, cartoon characters, animals and more. There's also a huge pile of Legos for kids to play with and even learn building techniques from Lego's master builders.

"It taps into the child's imagination and they can build whatever they want with any color they want, any shape," said father Chris Wilson, who surprised his son with a trip from Charlotte just for the show.

The Danish toy company recently passed rival Mattel to become the world's top toymaker after "an incredible quadrupling of revenues in less than 10 years."

"We think we are changing children's lives forever when they play with Lego," said Lego Chief Executive Joergen Vig Knudstorp. "We think this was another year where we got great affirmation of that

Lego KidsFest runs through March 2.
