DURHAM, N.C. -

Two people are murdered in the city of Durham in one day.  Now community leaders are looking for solutions to cut the crime.

Jerome Levisy, CEO of the John Avery Boys and Girls Club in Durham, says keeping kids out of jail has to start young.

"We have to take ownership and it starts with our youth," Levisy said.

After school basketball is one of a number of free activities here for kids ages six to 18.  Many of them, Levisy says, belong to working parents and may not have adult supervision after school.

"When the kids come to the club after school, they have to do their homework and 88 percent of the kids at the boys and girls club have shown a grade letter improvement," Levisy said.

Levisy says it's up to organizations like his, parents and the entire community to get involved.

"We have to be available.  We have to be available for when kids needs us most," Levisy said.

The John Avery Boys and Girls Club is a nonprofit organization.  If you'd like to give, text "Avery" to 501-501.  For information on how to donate to other Boys and Girls Clubs in the area, click here.
