Five arrested following Columbus police-involved shooting

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. - Authorities have arrested five individuals following an investigation in to a police-involved shooting Thursday night.

Demitruis Javan Perry, Davntone Jhaki Murphy, and a juvenile are all facing charges for what began as a burglary Thursday night. Additionally, Erwin Vincent Jenkins and George Franklin Warnick III are facing charges on unrelated charges.

Around 7:25p et, the Columbus Police Department E911 center received a call of a burglary in progress at 1026 Enoch Drive. Moments later, another 911 caller - later identified as Jenkins - told police the suspects were in a car on Preakness Drive. He advised the 911 operator that suspects were armed.

Around 7:50p et, responding officers spotted the vehicle on Stratford Drive. As two officers approached the vehicle, the car began driving at the officers at a high rate of speed, Columbus police Lt. J. F. Ross says in a news release late Thursday. From inside the vehicle Perry raised a handgun at one of the officers, who fired "his weapon in defense and the suspect vehicle continued to speed away," Lt. Ross writes.

No officers or witnesses were injured in the shooting. Perry was later driven to Midtown Medical Center by Warnick to receive medical treatment for a gunshot wound he suffered to his right shoulder. Perry was treated and released in to police custody. Warnick was arrested on drug charges.

The officer who fired their weapon has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the conclusion of the investigation. The Columbus Police Department's Investigate Bureau, Office of Professional Standards and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are continuing their investigation.
