Russell County Sheriff's Office investigating teen's homicide

Posted: Updated:
COTTONTON, Ala. - The Russell County Sheriff's Office is investigating a homicide after a teen was found dead in a church cemetery Wednesday.

Authorities tell News 3 that 18-year-old Sayquawn Lamer Wiggins was found Wednesday night by the pastor just before bible study at New Hope Baptist Church in Cottonton, Ala. Sheriff Heath Taylor says the teen was shot to death, but he is releasing few other details of Wiggins' death.

The sheriff did say the area is isolated, so it's unlikely there were any witnesses. He does believe Wiggins died at the church as opposed to being dumped there, and he says this is just the beginning of the investigation.

"We're still tracking with friends and family," says the sheriff, "we're doing cell phone searches for his cell phone. There's lots of things that we're doing trying to develop leads."

Sheriff Taylor says they are also searching for Wiggins's car, which is believed to be a newer model white Chevrolet Caprice.

Officials say Wiggins did not have any identification on him when he was found, but sheriff's deputies were able to identify him through state systems. The sheriff says he lived with his aunt in Phenix City.
