MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -

A Myrtle Beach man was arrested Wednesday morning after police said he spanked a child with a "switch."

According to an Horry County police report, Patrick Mayfield, 31, struck the 9-year-old child with a switch after the child angered his step-mother and "needed to be punished."

The victim had red marks and welts on his buttocks and arms, the report said.  The child told investigators that he could not sit down afterwards because of the pain.

Mayfield does have a prior history of child abuse against the child, according to the incident report.

Mayfield was in jail four months ago on the same charges. A family member now cares for the child.

A website identifies Mayfield as a co-founder of the "Imitators of Christ Ministries," which bills itself as an evangelistic ministry group that travels and spreads the love of Jesus Christ through song, dance, skits, steps, preaching, and teaching.

Mayfield was taken to the J Reuben Long Detention Center and charged with cruelty to children.
