Cool School: Lakewood Elementary

Posted: Updated:
Lakewood Elementary loves to teach its students about science. In fact, the school built an observation deck to do just that.

Third grade teacher Brandi Laney said, “Sometimes, we just like to walk out there and look. It's amazing. In our parts of the country you think that everything is flat. You just don't look at Phenix City and Columbus because the terrain is very much the same from where I am. But you can go out there and see that's not the case.”

Students say the deck allows them to go outside and explore nature. Jacob Middleton said, “We get to go out there with binoculars and see if we can find animals or anything.”

It's one of the many ways that the school incorporates science into its curriculum. What else is cool about the school? It's the greenhouse. The students get to work with plants and learn about how things grow.

The Greenhouse Coordinator Sheryl Siniard said, “They have planted the seeds and today we're transplanting better board tomato plants.”

The students learn by getting their hands dirty. Siniard added that, “It's an outdoor classroom not all children learn the same way. We know that. This is a kinesthetic approach and you learn by actually doing something.”

They are also having a good time while learning. Student Abigail Garner said, “Our greenhouse is pretty fun too.”

Administrators say that what makes Lakewood Elementary stand out, is that it strives to teach science beyond the classroom. Principal Curtis Barber said, “What makes us cool is that our children learn as much outside as they do inside. Education is not something that takes place between two covers in the book or in the four walls of a classroom. Its takes place and our kids love to do that.”
