UPDATE:  2/21/14

Garden City Police have arrested a suspect in connection with Tuesday night's hit and run on Ogeechee Road.

Shannon White is charged with Failure to Report Accident with Serious Injury, Failure to Report Accident with Damage and Suspended License.

Police say she was behind the wheel of a borrowed 2001 Toyota Avalon when she struck Stephanie Dean.

White is expected to be booked into the Chatham County Detention Center later this evening.

The search is on for a driver involved in a hit and run accident along a dangerous stretch of road Tuesday night.

20 year old Stephanie Dean was hit just after 11pm as she crossed near the 5000 block of Ogeechee Road.

Garden City Police say Dean was thrown almost 100 feet in the crash. She remains in stable condition at Memorial Medical Center.

The driver, described as a black female, who was at the wheel of a gray or silver 4 door sedan, stopped a few hundred yards after hitting Dean, but then sped away.

"There's a reason that the driver fled," explained Captain Gil Ballard of the Garden City Police Department. "We want to bring closure to the case and you know until we get some assistance from the public we may not be able to solve this."

That stretch of road is called by many folks the most dangerous in all of the area. 5 different deadly accidents involving pedestrians or bicyclists in the past 5 years.

"People do think about what they are doing and this is a heavily traveled roadway," said Ballard. "And stepping out into this roadway is not a safe thing to do."

Safety has been an issue for years in this area. Back in December a woman was hit and killed while trying to pick up lost items from her pickup truck.

A month earlier, a bicyclist is badly hurt when he is the victim of another hit and run.

"You always have to look behind you and keep your face down to look at the road because its not safe out there." said Jennifer Calderon back in 2012.

Calderon told News 3 that months before another accident killed someone on Ogeechee road. Its a stretch of dangerous pavement that has personally affected her.

"Nobody can see," said Calderon. "That's why there's been so many deaths. My friend's husband he died down here three years ago just crossing right there at the Sandman."

Dark streets and fast cars can be a deadly combination. But is there a viable an economical solution other than placing streetlights at every corner of this state road?

"Highway 17 is such a long span I wouldn't even want to think about what that would cost," explained Captain Ballard. "Some time these pedestrians are responsible for using crosswalks and not stepping in the roadway. That would help us too."

Ballard and other investigators say many times alcohol is a factor, either for the driver or the pedestrian.

While police are not saying alcohol may have played a role in this accident, they hope the public will help them find the driver involved.

The car is a gray or silver sedan with right front end damage, possibly a broken headlight.

If you can help find that car, call Garden City Police at (912) 966-7777.

A female pedestrian was hit by a car Tuesday night. Garden City Police said the driver is a heavyset black female driving a gray or silver 4 door sedan. Police said there should be damage to the driver side headlight. Police said the victim is in serious condition which could be upgraded to critical condition by the morning.

Highway 17 is closed in both directions at Barbour Drive.
