STATESBORO, GA -

A former Georgia Southern star running back can now get out of jail.

Wednesday, a Bulloch County judge granted Dominique Swope $25,000 bond today.

Swope is accused of aggravated assault in connection with a fight last week.

Swope was removed from the Georgia Southern football team after his arrest.

A Georgia Southern Football player turned himself in after a warrant was issued for his arrest on aggravated battery charges.

Statesboro Police say on Sunday February 9th, Dominique Shawn Swope was involved in an altercation at the Cambridge at Southern apartment complex on Lanier Drive.   Police say the victim, Cameron Zaquan Lewis, received serious head trauma and was taken by friends to East Georgia Regional Medical Center.

The case was turned over to Detective Sergeant James Winskey who identified Swope, who is a fullback for the GSU football team, as the offender.

Georgia Southern University officials say head coach Willie Fritz and Athletic Director Tom Kleinlein met and after several conversations with law enforcement officials and decided that the best course of action was to remove Swope from the team.

They say Swope's return to the team will be determined once he goes through the legal process and there is a better understanding of his involvement with this incident from a legal perspective.

Police say this is an ongoing investigation and no further information is being released at this time.

News 3 will continue to follow this incident and bring you the very latest.
